ABOUT ME

Stage Manager

I am a Graduate from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (2021) where I studies Theatre and Performance Technology. Whilst at LIPA I specialised in Stage Management and Lighting Design.

This is where I developed my Stage Management skills by working on all different types of shows, from Musicals to Devised Shows. It is also where I developed my professional skills of Risk Assessments, Props Making, Scheduling and maintaining communication between the director and the other members of the production team.

BRIGHT LIGHTS BIG CITY

Directors - Graham Hubbard
Role - ASM

Bright Lights Big City was the first production I worked on whilst in LIPA. It is a Rock musical based on the novel Jay Mclnerney. On this show my job role was an Assistant Stage Manager, where I gained in-depth knowledge on how the Stage Management Team works together, and with other departments, to help bring the show to life. It was here where I learnt the proper way to address the director in a rehearsal room and how to communicate effectively with the different departments on the production, as well as some basic prop making skills.

A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH

Director - James Baker
Role - ASM

My role on A Matter of Life and Death Was an Assistant Stage Manager. This was my first experience working on and with a Raked Stage so I had to get used to the physical aspects of working on a stage like this as well as the practical aspects. This show was rather prop heavy which gave me more knowledge on both props making and buying. We also needed to ensure that the actors had warmed up before each show as the raked stage would have caused a lot of strain on them.

GECKO PROJECT

Directors - Amit Lahav & Ryen Perkins
Role - Set Crew

The Gecko Project was a two part show taking place in two different theatres. Both shows had very different styles, so both sets were made in different styles, this gave me a good look into how set designs are brought o life and how to keep the designers vision whilst building and painting the stage. I also got to understand the Designers relationship with the Stage Management team better and with the director. This gave me a good insight on how important Rehearsal Notes can be.

THE SEVEN ACTS OF MERCY

Director - Jake Norton
Role - ASM

I worked as an Assistant Stage Manager on the seven acts of mercy. This was another voluntary role I was asked to do by the stage manager as we had worked together previously. I worked closely with the Design department during this show as I was doing set dressings and props. I was also in charge of pre-setting the stage as the SM had to become a "Stage Manager on book" as the DSM had to leave the show.

CHICAGO

Director - Graham Hubbard
Role - ASM

Once again I found myself in the role of ASM. This time, I worked on another musical with multiple props and a lot of things for me to do backstage. This role was exceptionally entertaining as I built a good repour with the performers on this show and with the entire crew. I also assisted with flys when doing the get out of the show, which gave me basic knowledge on how to fly a counterweight system and how to deweight a bar correctly.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Director - Blas  Barragan,  Jr.
Role - ASM

This was the first time I had worked on a  Concert of any form so I was a little out of my comfort zone but pushed on and managed to put on a good performance. To make it even harder, it was the first show I had done where we needed to consider COVID. This meant I had to ensure the show was COVID safe for both cast and crew. That made it a little harder but we still succeeded to put the show on.

BLUE STOCKINGS

Director - Elle While
Role - Casual Tech

Blue Stockings took place in Storyhouse theatre in Chester. This is where I did a placement whilst at LIPA. I helped build scaffolding up to create a raised stage, I helped with the set get in and with cables for lighting and sound. This gave me a good look into how things work in the industry compared to how they work in LIPA.

CLASSIC TEXT

Directors - Ben Phillips & Judith Mc Spadden
Role - LX Crew

"Classic Text" is a show LIPA does every year for the 2nd year actors to perform, adapted, classical texts. For this show, I was part of the LX Crew and learnt a lot of my base rigging and focusing skills. This is also where I learnt about some of the different types of lights used in theatre.

4.48 PSYCHOSIS

Director - Nicholas Bagnall
Role - SM

4.48 was a challenging show to work on as a Stage Manager because it deals with some very tough topics like mental health. Not only did we have to think of that as a team but we also had to think about COVID whilst working on this show. That meant keeping people two meters apart whilst rehearsing and ensuring they didn't get any closer when running the show. this proved to be difficult because we didn't want to take away from the director's vision.

3RD YEAR ACTING SHOWCASE

Director - James Baker
Role - SM

The 3rd Year Acting Showcase was the first time I had worked on a show that was directed and performed just for the camera. So working with a camera crew to ensure that the shots could be taken correctly and still give off the directors vison was something I had to understand quickly as I was brought onto this projects late.

DOMINO EFFECT / THE UNRAVELLING

Director - Brendon Burns
Role - DSM

Domino Effect and The Unravelling were two separate shows performed back to back. This was the first time I had been a DSM, so doing it for two different shows in one was a challenge I had to overcome very quickly. Not only because I was calling two shows but because it was also different casts and different set dressings which I had to help with during the interval.
